Case Study: Air Source Heat Pump (ASHP) and Building Management System (BMS) Installation at XYZ Logistics Centre

Project Overview

The XYZ Logistics Centre, a leading distribution hub, sought to enhance its energy efficiency and operational performance through the installation of an Air Source Heat Pump (ASHP) system and a Building Management System (BMS).

Aurora Electrical Services Ltd was contracted to deliver this project, aiming to reduce energy costs, improve temperature regulation, and streamline facility management.

Project Goals

1- Improve Energy Efficiency:

Implement a modern heating and cooling solution to optimise energy consumption.

2. Enhance Comfort and Climate Control:

Ensure consistent temperature regulation throughout the logistics facility.

3. Streamline Facility Management:

Integrate a comprehensive BMS to monitor and control building systems effectively.

4. Reduce Carbon Footprint:

Minimise greenhouse gas emissions associated with heating and cooling operations.

Project Components

1. Site Assessment:

  • Conducted a detailed assessment of the logistics centre to evaluate current heating and cooling systems.
  • Identified areas for efficiency improvements and the optimal placement for the ASHP units.

2. Selection of ASHP Units:

  • Chose high-efficiency ASHP units capable of providing both heating and cooling, tailored to the specific needs of the logistics centre.
  • Ensured the selected units met regulatory standards and were suitable for the facility’s size and operational requirements.

3. BMS Design and Integration:

  • Designed a user-friendly BMS that would allow for centralised control of the ASHP system and other building systems (lighting, security, etc.).
  • Integrated features for remote monitoring, scheduling, and data analytics to optimise energy usage and system performance.

4. Installation Process:

  • Planned the installation to minimize disruption to logistics operations, coordinating closely with facility management.
  • Installed the ASHP units on the roof and at ground level, ensuring proper insulation and ductwork for efficient operation.
  • Set up the BMS, connecting it to the ASHP system and other building systems for seamless operation.

5. Testing and Training:

  • Conducted rigorous testing to ensure the ASHP units and BMS functioned correctly and efficiently.
  • Provided training to facility staff on the operation of the BMS and maintenance of the ASHP units.

Implementation Process:

Phase 1: Assessment and Planning (Month 1)

  • Completed a comprehensive site assessment and developed a detailed project plan in collaboration with logistics centre stakeholders.

Phase 2:
Installation (Month 2)

  • Installed the ASHP units and BMS components, ensuring minimal disruption to daily operations during the process.

Phase 3:
Testing and Training (Month 3)

  • Conducted testing and commissioned both systems, followed by training sessions for staff to ensure proper understanding and usage.

Results

  • Energy Efficiency Improvement: The ASHP system improved the centre’s energy efficiency by approximately 35%, resulting in significant cost savings on heating and cooling bills.
  • Enhanced Climate Control: The BMS provided precise control over temperature settings, ensuring optimal conditions for the logistics operations and improving overall comfort for employees.
  • Streamlined Operations: The centralised control system allowed facility managers to monitor energy usage in real-time and make data-driven decisions, leading to improved operational efficiency.
  • Reduced Carbon Emissions: The transition to ASHP technology contributed to a measurable reduction in the centre’s carbon footprint, aligning with corporate sustainability goals.

Conclusion

The successful installation of the Air Source Heat Pump system and Building Management System at the XYZ Logistics Centre, completed by Aurora Electrical Services Ltd, demonstrates the significant benefits of modernizing facility infrastructure. This project not only achieved substantial energy savings and operational efficiencies but also reinforced the logistics centre’s commitment to sustainability.

This case study exemplifies how strategic upgrades in facility management systems can lead to improved efficiency, reduced costs, and a positive environmental impact, setting a benchmark for logistics operations in the industry.
